Parts of Speech: Learn the basics

All the sentences in the English language contain verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs etc. These are known as 'parts of speech'. They are required to complete any sentence logically. A grammatically correct sentence depends on the parts of speech for their accuracy. We will discuss about the eight parts of speech in this article.

Parts of Speech:


1. Verb

The verb refers to an action or a state of action. Some of the most used verbs include 'be, have, do, like' etc.

Example:

1. I love football.
2. I run in the morning.
3. Do you have a candy?
4. They are fighting with the rebels.
5. He is babysitting them.

2. Adjective

The adjective is used to describe a noun. Example words include 'red, big, beautiful' etc.

Example:

1. I have an amazing dog.
2. I like cream cakes.
3. She is beautiful.
4. It is a great company.
5. The car is sturdy.

3. Noun

It is used to denote a specific thing or person. Example words are 'pen, dog, bus' etc.

Example:

1. This is my house.
2. This is my car.
3. We live in Singapore.
4. The river is overflowing.
5. The tank edged closer.

4. Adverb

It is used to describe a verb or an adjective. Words can be 'silently, badly, really' etc.

Example:

1. My son eats quickly.
2. When he is very angry, he shouts a lot.
3. He is really a great guy.
4. She is a very bad manager.
5. She visits us occasionally.

5. Preposition

The job of a preposition is to link a noun to another word. Sample words include 'to, at, after, on'.

Example:

1. She went to school on Tuesday.
2. I will be coming on Monday.
3. Christmas is on Wednesday.
4. They will come after the match.
5. He is staying at Harold's.

6. Pronoun

It is used to replace or substitute a noun. Sample words are 'I, you, he, she'.

Example:

1. Tara is American. She is beautiful.
2. The material is from Germany and it is very strong.
3. The Italians are very cunning. They are not to be trusted.
4. She is very talented.

7. Interjection

Interjections are short exclamations and are used to denote surprise. Sample words are 'oh! Hi!'.

Example:

1. Ouch! That's painful!
2. Hi! Do I know you?
3. It's amazing!
4. What a serene picture!
5. That's a horrible smell!

8. Conjunction

While joining clauses in the sentences, conjunctions are used. Sample words are 'and, but, when'.

Example:

1. I like chicken and fish.
2. I love bread and jam.
3. I like dogs but I don't like cats.
4. Bring the shirt and the pants.
5. Both the pen and pad should be on the table.
