Do you love cooking? Many of us enjoy cooking and get immense happiness out of the activity as in the end we get to enjoy delicious food. Yes, we all love to eat. We read many magazines, blogs, articles and watch videos to learn new recipes and try them out. Sometimes, it so happens that we don’t understand words that are mentioned in the recipes. It is important to know the meaning of those words as they help us learn new words and also a new recipe.

Let’s improve our cooking vocabulary.


Cooking Vocabulary

1. Blend

Meaning - to mix (things) thoroughly
Example – Blend the tomatoes to make a puree.

2. Bake

Meaning – to cook in an oven using heat
Example – They bake cakes and breads in their bakery.

3. Barbecue

Meaning - to cook foods like fish, meat on a grill by using fire.
Example – If you love fish then you must try barbecued fish at Heaven Seafoods.

4. Broil

Meaning - to cook at an extremely high temperature.
Example – You need to try out that broiled sea food with herbs.

5. Carve

Meaning – to cut cooked meat into slices for eating.
Example - Soni decided to carve the roasted chicken.

6. Grate

Meaning - To divide into small parts by rubbing on a serrated surface, usually used with cheese and coconut.
Example – Can you grate some cheese?

7. Grease

Meaning - To coat with oil or butter.
Example –Why don’t you grease the vegetables?

8. Toss

Meaning – Mixing
Example - When tossing salad, you have to evenly mix all the vegetables and the lettuce together.

9. Scramble

Meaning - to mix, stir or throw together in a random way.
Example – Scramble the eggs and whisk them.

10. Whisk

Meaning - beat or stir (a substance, especially cream or eggs) with a light, rapid movement.
Example - Whisk the yolks with half the sugar.

11. Sauté

Meaning - To quickly fry food by placing it in hot oil in a frying pan.
Example - Sauté the onion until translucent and then add tomatoes.

12. Knead

Meaning - to press and stretch dough or paste with the hands
Example – Knead the dough until it becomes soft.

13. Mince

Meaning – to grind food
Example –After sautéing, add the minced ginger and garlic.

The above verbs must have surely made your cooking vocabulary strong. It is a good way to learn a recipe and improve English at the same time. If you watch videos, you would have heard these words. Sometimes the native speakers use these words but pronounce it in a different accent. Learning the pronunciation helps to make your English speaking fluent.
