Erection Physiology

The urethra is a passage both for urine and for the ejaculation of semen during sexual intercourse. In the testes the sperms are produced and stored in the attached epididymis. During ejaculation, sperm travels through the vas deferens and fluids are added by the seminal vesicles and the vas deferens turns into the ejaculatory ducts and join the urethra inside the prostate gland. The prostate add further secretions, and the semen is expelled through the penis.

Erection

The stiffening and rising of the penis is called as erection. It occurs during the sexual intercourse when males get sexually aroused. The erection is the autonomic dilation of arteries supplying blood to the penis and allows more blood to fill the three spongy erectile tissue chambers in the penis, causing it to lengthen and stiffen. The now engorged erectile tissue presses against and constricts the veins that carry blood away from the penis.

Erection facilitates sexual intercourse only and it is not necessary for other sexual activities.
