The best way to ask someone’s name in English

Whether you are speaking English, or any language, the key is to be polite. And if you are speaking English as a new learner, or someone who is only polishing their spoken English, you need to be extra careful about being polite and using the right words. When trying to communicate in English, you should be careful about how you are communicating and how you put across anything. There will be many instances where you will have to think about how to put across a question. One of them is when you have to ask someone’s name. Sometimes, asking ‘What’s your name?’ will be too direct, and might also be considered impolite. So, how do you do it? There will be different situations where asking  people their names will be important, but posing the question will be a little tricky. So how do you do it? Here are some examples of how you can handle such a situation.

The best way to ask someone’s name in English

On the phone

When speaking to someone on the phone, it is better if you know the person’s name, because it becomes easier to communicate better and make it more personal. But if you have been talking on the phone for a while, and can’t recollect the name of the person, it can be a bit embarrassing to ask the person’s name suddenly. The best way to do is admit that you can’t recollect the person’s name and politely ask for it. How you can say that is, “I am sorry, but I can’t seem to recollect your name.” Or you can also say, “This is a little embarrassing, but can you please help me with your name again.”

In a face-to-face interaction

face-to-face interaction

Some people have real difficulty remembering people’s names. It gets even more embarrassing when you are talking to that person face-to-face. While you can take the route of not mentioning the person’s name throughout, but what if you need that person’s attention, what do you do then? You can poke fun at yourself, and your wretched memory by saying, “Bless my brain, but it just can’t remember anyone’s names! I am so sorry, but can you please help me with your name again?” Or you can save the day by saying, “You know what, try as hard as I can, I just can’t recollect your name. It’s right at the tip of my tongue, but I can’t get it out.”

After you have the person’s name, make sure you remember it!
