How to show around during sightseeing?

You are the tourist guide for a group of 20 tourists of international mix. The tourist destination is Hawa Mahal in Jaipur and as the tourist guide; you are expected to be knowledgeable about the location. Won't it be nice if you can share your knowledge about the place in fluent English to display your talent, skills and sophistication?

Things to keep in mind:

1. Do your homework

Before embarking on a sightseeing trip, ensure that you have all the updated location information. Tourists can be a sophisticated audience and you do not want to be embarrassed in front of them with your lack of knowledge and expertise.

2. Manage time

It is important to have good time management skills. Tourists need to see large areas within a short period of time. Make sure you give the most appropriate information within the prescribed time. However, this does not mean that you should rush them and deprive them of the joys of sightseeing. Instead, give each site a specific time and plan your activities accordingly.

Sample Conversation:

Situation: You are leading a group of 20 international tourists (German, Korean and American ) and have arrived at the famous Hawa Mahal.

You: "Welcome to Hawa Mahal, the famous palace of the winds."

Tourist1: "Wow, it's quite intricate and beautiful. Who built this and when?"

You: "This grand palace was built in 1798 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. The construction is done entirely with red and pink sandstone, hence the pink color."

Tourist 2: "Why is this palace located in the main city and what was its purpose?"

You: "It's a good question. This palace was not built for defense or residence purpose, instead it was built for the royal ladies to enable them to observe daily public life without being seen, as they had to strictly cover their face according to the societal norms."

Tourist 2: "Wow that is interesting."

Tourist 3: "In spite of this hot afternoon, why is the air so cool, same as air conditioning?"

You: "It's all due to the design of the palace. The lattice at the windows provides cool air even during hot days due to the intricate design. The effect is known as a Venturi effect or doctor breeze."

Tourist 4: "Can we take pictures?"

You: "Yes you may! However, please keep it within 5 minutes so that the rest of our itinerary does not get affected. Enjoy!"
