Position and Function of Cervix

Introduction to Cervical infections

Cervical position

Once the menstrual cycle of the month gets completed the cervix undergoes a series of changes directly under the influence of the hormone estrogen. The changes of cervix occur in its in position and texture. The cervix becomes softer during the ovulation period. It rises and opens in response to the high levels of estrogen present at ovulation. All these changes help the sperm to survive and easily move inside the female body.

Function of Cervix

The cervix stretches open slightly during the menstrual period. Then only the endometrium can be shed. This stretching creates a cramping pain to many women and this is a unbearable experience to some women with more pain. It won’t allow this type of women to walk freely at least. They would like to lie down all through the menstrual period.

But some women's cramps disappear after their first vaginal birth. It was proved by many cases. It is because of the wider cervical opening. During childbirth the uterus contraction dilate the cervix up to 10 cm in diameter to allow the child to pass through.

Orgasm  is the maximum satisfaction during sexual intercourse of the humans. In the orgasm state, the cervix convulses and the external os dilates. This helps to draw semen in the vagina into the uterus. This may increase the likelihood of conception. This is known as the "Up suck theory of female orgasm."

The upsuck theory has been widely accepted by scientists for the past 12 years... But unfortunately the evidence for it is really badly flawed.

Some treatments to prevent cervical cancer, such as LOOP, cold-knife conization, or cryotherapy may shorten the cervix.

Cervical Cancer:

Human Papilloma Virus infects the cervix leading to cervical cancer. HPV vaccines may help to reduce the chance of developing cervical cancer if it is given before the sexual activity.

Nowadays the Pap smear tests help to detect the pre-cancerous changes in the cervix. In this Pap smear test, the epithelial cells are scraped from the surface of the cervix and examined under a microscope. If we detect the cervical cancer properly it can be easily curable. We can prevent the disease from spreading if the abnormalities have been identified on time.

Every women need to take the pap smear test at least once in 4-5 years to avoid the development of cancer.
