How to diplomatically report a problematic child behaviour to Principal and parents ?

You have a problematic kid in your class who refuses to listen to instructions, disturbs others and creates a ruckus every day. You have tried your best to discipline him, but to no avail. Now you need to escalate the matter to higher levels. How will you go about bringing the child's behavior to the notice of his parents or principal without sounding frustrated? You need to stay calm, focused and use diplomatic English language. Diplomatic language is used in order to tactfully deal with explosive situations.

Things to remember when reporting a problematic child to principal and parents:

1. Explain properly

Explain the problems properly and in detail. Reporting a reckless student often involves harsh consequences like suspension and rustication. While reporting, analyze whether the student's action can or cannot be rectified. Even if the student is unrepentant after numerous warnings, he may warrant harsh disciplinary actions.

2. Mode of communication

Usually, verbal communication is used while informing the principal and written form is used to inform parents. However, it is better to follow up with a call to the parents after the written note. This is because many a times, the erring student may skip delivering the note to his parents.

Simple way to report problematic child behavior:

A. Principal

"Sir, I want to bring to your notice, the behaviour of Rajesh Verma, my student in VIII Std. He is being reckless in his behavior since the past month. He does not listen to instructions, disturbs the class and creates a ruckus unnecessarily. I have tried making him understand many times and even warned him, but he is not ready to listen. I came to you as a last resort. Please try to talk some sense into him or choose a punishment which you deem appropriate."

B. Parent

1. Written Note:

Dear Mr. Verma,

This is to bring to your notice that Rajesh has been behaving irresponsibly in the past month. He does not listen to instructions, disturbs the class and creates a ruckus unnecessarily. Please ensure that he changes his behavior for the better or the school will be forced to undertake harsh disciplinary actions. I am awaiting your confirmation on the recipiet of the note.

2. On Call:

You: Hello, Am I speaking to Mr. Verma?

Verma: Yes. Who is online?

You: This is Prof. Suraj, Rajesh's class teacher.

Verma: Good Morning Mr. Suraj, How are you?

You: I am good. I have called with regards to the note which I gave to Rajesh. Did you receive it? I did not get any confirmation, that's why I called.

Verma: Sorry Sir. I did not get any note.

You: I was afraid of that. Mr. Verma, Rajesh has become a problematic student for the past month. He does not listen to teachers and creates a ruckus in the class. If he does not improve, we will have to suspend him. To avoid that, we had requested a meeting with you.

Verma: Oh. That's bad. I apologize on his behalf. I will give a stern warning and will meet this weekend.
