How to state opinions on various subjects?

It is very important for you to have your own opinions. It is what differentiates us from other living beings. Opinions help us to utilize our English speaking and writing skills, influencing others or stating what we think. They can be put forward in speech as well as writing. For both the methods, you need to have excellent English communication skills. Many situations can arise that may warrant you to state your opinions. It may be in the form of advice, business or political one or even a serious matter affecting the society.

Things to remember when stating opinions on various subjects:

1. Research on the topic

Don't just give any offhand comments. Be aware of the topics discussed before giving your opinions so that you come across as well informed. If you just give an opinion for the sake of it, you will come across as uncultured and uneducated.

2. Back up your opinion

It is important to back your opinions with facts. With them, you can stick to your ground and voice your opinions more confidently. Read extensively, this can provide the basis for both facts as well as English vocabulary.

3. Starting phrases

You could start by using one of the following phrases:

a. I wish to say.
b. I would like to say.
c. I think.
d. I feel.

Sample situations :

Situation 1: Your boss has sent you an email with the latest financial statistics and has asked your opinion on the matter in the reply,

Solution:

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your email with the detailed reports.

I feel that the information points to the fact that our revenue is on the growth and will continue to do so in the next two years. However, I will like to say that we need to continuously innovate and bring out new product ranges, at least two per year. This will allow us to grow more market share in a short time.

Thanks and Regards,

Ravi Kumar

Product Manager.

Situation 2:

You are having a chat on the existing political and law order situation in the country, with your best friend.

Sanjay: So, the elections are coming soon, which party are you going to vote?

You: I haven't decided yet. But I may vote CAD party.

Sanjay: Are there any special reasons?

You: Yes, there is. CAD is the ruling party in Gayaland and their performance there is exemplary, unlike the central government. There is proper law and order and women have greater protection over there. The employment rate is also on the rise.

Sanjay: That's true! But there were terrible riots some years before and CAD was blamed!

You: Well, the official inquiry acquitted the chief minister and he has been cleared of any wrongdoing. He has taken initiatives in the areas, which concern to me as a citizen.
