5 Holiday phrases and idioms

1. Let your hair down

Meaning - to allow yourself to behave much more freely than usual and enjoy yourself.

Examples:

Once you reach Thailand you can let your hair down.

I want to go somewhere, where I can let my hair down.

2. In the middle of nowhere

Meaning – In the middle of nowhere means a place far away from any towns and cities and where only a few people live.

Examples:

I want to go and live in the middle of nowhere.

Hey Rina, where was your hotel in Paris? Seema, it was somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

3. A change is as good as a rest

Meaning - you can get as much good from changing the work you do as from having a rest.

Examples:

What are your plans for this Christmas? Nothing much. I am going to aunt’s place. After all, a change is as good as a rest.

I have no plans for New Year. I think it’s better to have a change which is as good as a rest.

4. Home away from home

Meaning - a place where you feel as comfortable as you do in your own home.

Examples:

Normally, hotel rooms don’t give that homely feel, but this room gave a home away from home feeling.

Our cottage was like a home away from home. I had everything right from a microwave to the washing machine.

5. Everything but/except the kitchen sink

Meaning - a much larger number of things than is necessary.

Examples:

When you have kids with you, you pack everything except the kitchen sink.

I think you have packed everything except the kitchen sink.

Idioms play an important role in conversation. Learning them will help you speak fluent English confidently and improve your English-speaking skills.
