How to Describe your Home?

"Heart is where the home is."

- Joseph. C. Neal

Your home is a place that accepts you for the person you are. It is a place you know will hold you warm and cozy in days when you feel lost and teary eyed. A place that is sacred to you and holds a shelter for your near and dear ones.

Describe your home

The sentimental value that one's home holds for him/ her is beyond the description of words yet if you're in a situation that requires you to describe your home, you should be prepared and well in touch with the English language to enable you to speak English fluently and boldly.

Talk about the physical attributes of your home

Always start with where you reside, the area, the location, probably even the sector, if applicable. Go on to the details of how your home appears. While speaking about its appearance, be extremely inspired and involve the zeal you share for your home that will add a boost to your description. Introduce a good set of adjectives in your description; this will heighten your image as well as develop your spoken English skills.

How to Describe your Home

Example: "My home is located in Bandra on Carter Road. I live in a magnificent row house, which flaunts a small yet dainty garden at the entrance to my home. As you enter you will see an elegant formal living room attached to which is our stylish and chic family dining room. Adjacent to our munching area is a healthy kitchen that is a fashionable open one. We have three graceful and fancy bedrooms with the master bath on one side and the other two bedrooms on the opposite side of the house. There are translucent curtains running throughout the house and the entire house is painted in a light cream tint bringing in the required brightness and airiness."

Introduce the people you reside with

By now, the person has a fair idea of what your home looks like. Now, you need to introduce the people that live with you in your home to intensify the description. All you need to do is give a brief opening about your family members that live with you as they form a major part of your home.

Example: "I share my house with three more members besides me. My loving mother, my motivating father, and my mischievous sibling. They are the sole reason of my being and what I have made out of my life today. They complete my home and me."

Family

Adjectives play an extremely important role in any form of description. So, make it a point to make use of as many adjectives as possible without being too pushy. A regular use of adjectives will help you improve your English speaking fluency and give you a confidence once you get aware about which adjective to use where. In addition, constantly conversing in English will give you a strong base of the language and will improve your English communication skills as well.

How to Describe Your Family?

There are numerous words that one could use to describe his/ her family and frankly... 'Dull' cannot be one of them! So, it's time to buck up on your English speaking skills and pump up some adrenaline in your description.

Family

When you are asked to describe your family, you can start by describing each person of your family one at a time. Remember, the shorter, the sweeter! Describe the key members in your life, your immediate family. Let's take a look at one example to give you a brief gist of which direction you should expand in.

Example:

Describe your family

My family consists of my mother, father and my little sister.

Beginning with my mother, she is like any other mom. Loving, caring, and concerned yet when she is angry you will definitely know. She's artistic and seeks to do things that revolve around art. She loves to cook and is extremely innovative even in that aspect. She is the anchor of our house and is definitely the driving force for our family!

My father is the cornerstone of our family. He is rigid yet flexible. He is responsible for all the discipline in our house. Possessing the love for gardening, he invests a lot of his time in innovative gardening techniques. He loves all of us and holds himself responsible for our family's well being. My inspiration, my dad.

The mischievous, little one in our family is my little sister. Being the youngest, luck is always on her side. She is blessed with a smile of an angel, she too has got the artistic touch of mom. Art and Crafts hold her attention for the longest time throughout the day. Filling our house with a frequent set of frowns and smiles, she is indeed the little demon of our house.

The mischievous

Read through the above example and make a few pointers.

Rule #1: While you're describing a member of your family, be clear in describing the role played by that particular member in your household.

Rule #2: Spell out the personality of the person you're describing. Be descriptive and analytical.

Rule #3: Talk about that person's interests and hobbies, likes and dislikes.

Rule #4: Never oversell. Keep your description grounded to reality rather than just spluttering a set of irrelevant adjectives.

Rule #5: Be positive. While attempting to describe someone always make it a point to give your description the 'positive tilt'.

Having been born and brought- up among those members, describing them must be the easiest task. Ensure you make use of basic English speaking terms and add a touch of applicable adjectives to improve your spoken English and go through this task efficiently.

Tip:

While describing your family, make sure there is a flow. Use your descriptions to move the story forward. Do not list things; make sure your description assists what you narrate . Being descriptive is an art and an art is something you pick up after dedicated practice.

"There is no sincerer love than the love of food."

- George Bernard Shaw

Talk_about_like_Dislike

We all love food! Food is one thing that is common among all human beings. Of course, over time we begin to develop a liking or a dislike towards certain types of food. For some chocolate must be something to gorge upon whereas for a few, chocolate probably does not ring the desire bell in one's palette.

Possessing a dislike or a liking for something cannot be judged, instead one should learn about how to express their likes and dislikes in well- spoken English. It is crucial to ensure your English grammar is well in-sync with the vocabulary you choose to use. Simple spoken English in the first few days of your exercise should work as a charm.

Let's begin this exercise with a brief example for 'dislike':

bitter
"I am not a very fussy eater but there are a few things that my palette detests. The topmost item on my dislike list has got to be bitter gourd. I do not like the bitter flavor and juices that ooze out with every bite you take. The texture too according to me is not as per my liking. I've tried numerous times to build and acquire a taste for bitter gourd but all in vain. Hence, I avoid eating it as and when I have an option or two."

An example for 'like':

Chocolate

"I cannot get over the addiction I have built for chocolate. My liking for chocolate starts and ends at one point...its dark and intense flavor. It is extremely sweet with the exact tint of bitterness that suits my taste and liking. It could be eaten at any point of time throughout the day. I like my chocolate dark and soft. I also love the fact that it could be added to any milkshake or sweet dish as per one's desire. It's extremely inviting and indulgent!"

It is always good to keep your English speaking skills at its sharpest best when describing or explaining something to someone. This is a great exercise to improve your English and your English speaking skills effectiveness.

The art of description is all about being expressive and animated. Also, remember to be closely choosy about the words you use, as there are times that have you baffled about which word to use where. Get empowered with well-spoken English now!
